  3.  Description of the story-  In an ever-changing environment, it is important for officials to be aware of the changing sea levels and address ways on how to prevent potentially dangerous storm surge.  According to a recent study by the US Army Corp of Engineers, sea levels are expected to rise about 2 feet within the next 50 years and storm surge could raise a minimum of 1 foot.  Due to this research, the Army corps is suggesting that seawall heights be required to be 4 feet by 2035 andapproximately 5 feet by 2050.  These new heights will also help with annual tidal flooding which can cause a financial burden in damage.  County officials are currently looking at opitions to help residents pay for the taller seawalls as they can cost over $1000 per linear foot.
  4.  Description of the problem presented in the story-  The main issue that is emphasized in this article is the fact that residents may struggle to pay for the larger seawalls and may require financial assistance.  The county commission is trying to look into ways to get funding and is expected to vote on ideas in mid-2019.
  5. Who has the problem-  Broward Country coastal residents are mainly affected by this issue since they will be the ones covering the majority of the costs.  City commissioners also need to think of a way to help alleviate the costs to best accomodate the individials.

Description of the story- As of Tuesday 9/11/2018, Hurricane Florence was growing strongly and became a category 4 hurricane.  This storm has a width of about 500 miles, putting a lot of areas a lot of areas at risk, especially the coasts South Carolina and North Carolina.  While it is predicted that 1 million residents in these areas are fleeing to other regions, many residents are making the consicous choice to stay behind for various reasons.  States of emergency have been declared in Virginia, Maryland, North Carolina, and South Carolina.
4. Description of the problem presented in the story-  The main issue is that there is expected to be catastrophic damage and storm surge, even for structures that seem to be very well-prepared and sturdy.  Also, power outages could last "weeks to possibly months" which would prevent a lot of people from going on with their daily activities comfortably.  Residents will need greater supplies of necessities as well as generators to attempt to recover from the storm.
5.  Who has the problem-  Residents within the storm's projected path are the ones most affected by the problem since they are at risk of damage to their health and properties.  Hurricanes can be a very scary experience and many people are not able to leave due to issues with their families, pets, finances, etc.  These individuals will most likely need more supplies following the aftermath of the storm and may need to make insurance claims.

3. Description of the story-  Doctors are reporting more cases of whooping cough and may outbreaks have not been seen since the 1950s.  Studies are currently being done on the effectiveness  of the vaccines but the CDC is recommending vaccines for this illness for people of all ages.  There are different doses of the shot based on age but it is important to be aware of your symptoms hen you have a cough as the vaccine does not always work and the sickness can be potentially life-threatening.  This article in particular emphasizes the story of a 16-year old boy that had such a bad cough that he couldn't breathe and was shocked to realize that he had this sickness as it was thought to be so dated.
4. Description of the problem presented in the story-The main issue is that people are unaware that whopping cough still exists and if symptoms are missed, it can be potentially life-threatening.  Cough attacks associated with this sickness can cause people to be very low on oxygen and weaken other parts of their body.  More individuals need to be aware of the various versions of the vaccine that are being offered and should be knowledgeable on different symptoms so that they can prevent themselves from getting into a dangerous situation.
5.  Who has the problem-  This problem affects people of all ages, and especially parents as they need to be particularly aware of their young children's and baby's coughs as they are the most prone to suffering from complications of the sickness.

4. Description of the problem presented in the story- The main problem presented in the article is that more people are being diagnosed with ADHD.  We, as a society, will need to fulfill this need by creating a greater supplies of the medicines and looking into the ays that we are appropiately making diagnoses.

Description of the story- The area of Opa-Locka has been dealing with gross conditions that have been neglected by city officials.   Large amounts of untreated sweage filled water fled the streets and residents were not infomred that the water posed risks of E. Coli, dysentery, and meningitis.  Tests completed by Miami-Dade County showed that the water that flooded the streets in early August consisted of 50 times the amount of fecal matter that would cause a beach to close.
4. Description of the problem presented in the story-  The main issue is that many people were exposed to this filthy water and could get sick.  There needs to be a better solution to this sewage problem but there is a lack of funding from county officials.  A solution is needed from a sewage company that could properly deal with the drainage systems.
5.  Who has the problem-  Residents and businesses are most affected as they do not want to live in an environment that is unwelcoming, gross, and potentially dangerous.  These dirty waters can deter people from going to their favorite stores and services because they do not want to have to treck through smelly liquids.

  1. You presented a wide variety of local opportunities in this assignment, most of which reach wide audiences of "prototypical consumers" because they could potentially impact a lot of people. Currently, the most urgent problem is that of helping the people who have been affected by Hurricane Florence, and to aid the communities that were damaged from floods and strong winds. Thanks for elaborating on these problems!

  2. I really enjoyed reading your local opportunities. As most people, I am only aware of the most important/global matters and I found it so interesting to learn about a specific city's recent problems and opportunities. The ADHD article was something I can very relate with as I have a couple members of my family having this problem. Overall, great article and I am excited to read your next week's posts.

  3. I found your post to be very informative and well thought out! The article about whooping cough making a return was of particular interest to me. I have read countless articles about diseases we believed to be nearly extinct returning to the population. Unfortunately, diseases like this are unknown to most people and this creates a huge public health problem. Im sure that the CDC and local agencies will take action to isolate cases and inform the public adequately. Living in a coastal town, I never really thought about the need for a bigger sea wall. That was also interesting to me to see how we must adapt to the changing environment.
