27A – Reading Reflection No. 3

1) What was the general theme or argument of the book?
I decided to read The Art of Social Media: Power Tips for Power Users by Guy Kawaski because I am very interested in social media and the ways in which it connects us to other users more efficiently. By reading this book, I was able to gain powerful strategies and insights into what it takes to have a strong social media presence and maintain beneficial followers.
2) How did the book, in your opinion, connect with and enhance what you are learning in ENT 3003?
This book definitely enhanced my learning in ENT 3003 because social media has become such a big part of marketing for so many businesses and I wanted to improve my knowledge on this essential tool to promote my ideas.  I am very passionate about my business "Stacked" and can think of several campaigns that I could complete on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.
3) If you had to design an exercise for this class, based on the book you read, what would that exercise involve?
I would design an exercise for people to come up with a social media campaign for their business idea and they would have to give examples of the posts that they would make and provide a timeline to spread out their ideas.  This activity would help them get in the mindset of what it takes to put on a social media campaign and help spark their creativity which can expand to the rest of their campaign.
4) What was your biggest surprise or 'aha' moment when reading the book? In other words, what did you learn that differed most from your expectations?
I think one of the most useful things that I learned was the power of Pinterest and how it can help you gain greater ideas for your social media posts.  I don't typically use Pinterest unless I am working on a particular project but now recognize that it is a great outlet for finding topics that people find interesting and sharing them on different platforms.  For example, I could use Pinterest to see what kinds of things that people associate with brunch to better design my restaurant and make it have a cool atmosphere an reputation.

  1. Hey Emily,
I also read this book but it was for my second reading reflection. This was a great book with a lot of good tips. I like the class exercise that you thought of! That’s a good idea. I also did not know that Pinterest could help you think of topics for social media posts. I rarely use Pinterest and when I do it’s to look up pictures for a certain theme. Nice post.

  2. I've had to comment on this book for someone else's work a couple of weeks ago. I've to say that although the basis of your two works is the same, some of the conclusions you guys have are very different . I found the exercise you would do very interesting and probably very efficient for the business/ high-tech world . I am happy to be reading your last couple of assignments left for this semester .

  3. I looked at reading this book, and will probably pick it up in the future. I think the exercise you described in your post would be a great way to practice using social media in the business world. The idea of using Pinterest to aid in social media marketing is also very interesting. I had the opportunity to create a social media presence for an independent business, and there is definitely more to this form of marketing than one would think. Great job with your reading reflection!

  4. Hey Emily,
I also read this book for my final reading reflection, and I found it quite fascinating. As you likely learned, this book did an incredible job of outlining the efficiency and power of social media in todays world. Simply knowing its value and how to use it properly can connect you with business contacts as well as customers. I think your idea of creating a social media marketing campaign would be a phenomenal exercise for this class. As college students, we use social media a lot but I am not sure if we use it to its full potential.
