21A – Reading Reflection No. 2

1) What was the general theme or argument of the book?
In the book How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big, Scott Adams emphasizes various lessons that he has learned throughout his life that are both beneficial for personal and professional issues.  I really enjoyed reading this book because the author was very personal and made his writing seem almost conversational and informal.  His strategies for success include everything from faking it till you make it, to speaking with positivity, and even having a system to achieve your desired goals.
2) How did the book, in your opinion, connect with and enhance what you are learning in ENT 3003?

This book exemplified much of the lessons that I have learned in ENT3003 and emphasized how anyone can be an entrepreneur if they have the right mindset.  I recognize that you do not have to be some brilliant inventor to start your own business but instead need to embody the key strategies to having an open mind and being adaptive to one's environment.
3) If you had to design an exercise for this class, based on the book you read, what would that exercise involve?
I would design an exercise in which people rank all of the tasks in their daily lives that they see as important and then determine who is benefiting from them.  I think that people often forget to take care of themselves before they take care of others and it would be interesting to see how people's values come into play with their responsibilities/ wants.
4) What was your biggest surprise or 'aha' moment when reading the book? In other words, what did you learn that differed most from your expectations?
I was very interested by the author's explanation that we must look out ourselves before we seek to care for others. While this view can often be viewed as selfish, I realized that it can actually be recognized as selfless because we need to be our best selves in order to make a difference in other people's lives.  For example, if we are always running around helping people we may not get enough sleep and will therefore be too drained to give all of our effort into our goals. This idea is something that I will take into consideration as I move throughout the rest of my college career and beyond to make various accomplishments both mentally and physically.

  1. Hi!
This book sounds really interesting! I agree that while it's important to try and help and care for others in our daily routines, it's just as important to check-in with ourselves. A lot of people often forget to take time for themselves (even if just for a few minutes) because they don't want to be seen as selfish, but self-care is a vital part of success. Thank you for sharing what you found while reading this book!

  2. Hey Emily,
I really enjoyed reading your book reflection. I am actually going to read this book for my last reading reflection! This definitely seems interesting and I like how you discussed about how we should take care of ourselves before taking care of others. We need to get enough sleep and food like you said to be able to take care of others. I look forward to reading this book. Good job!

  3. Hey Emily,
I think you did a great job describing the book in this book reflection. I like how you did a nice overview of the theme that flows throughout the book as a whole but left some mystery. In addition, I found the statement about caring for ourselves before we can care for others. In my experiences, I have found helping others to be rewarding, but you cannot neglect yourself to help others. People in a mindset where they are neglecting themselves are in no position to help others.
